Lot Essay

Queen of Trumps was foaled in 1832 by Velocipede out of Princess Royal by Castrel. She was owned by the Hon. Edward Lloyd Mostyn, M.P., and in 1835 she won both the Oaks and St. Leger Stakes, ridden by Tommy Lee. At Doncaster she was odds on and beat a very good horse called Hornsea in what most people regarded as a match between them despite the fact that Mundig, Ascot and Trim were also in the field. Later in the week she started at 10/1 on in another race but got beaten a head because she swerved all over the place after being attacked by a dog inside the final furlong. Sadly she died in foaling in 1843 and her foals were unremarkable.
