Lot Essay

The present work depicts Amaryllis Garnett, Vanessa Bell and Duncan Grant's grandchild. Bell and Grant's daughter, Angelica Bell, had married David Garnett, a man who had enjoyed an affair with Grant and had been present at Angelica's birth on December 25, 1918. When Angelica was in her early twenties, they married (on May 8, 1942) and had four daughters (Amaryllis, Henrietta, and twins Nerissa and Frances), but later separated. Their eldest daughter Amaryllis (1943-1973) became an actress.
