Lot Essay

In the early 1950's the artists Dirk Hubers (1913-2003) and Betty Hubers-Scheuffler (1907-1991) transformed their studio on the Sluislaan in Bergen into Kunstzaal Hubers for summer exhibitions. Apart from Appel, Corneille and Constant, other artists exhibited were Jacob Bendien, Harry van Kruiningen and Jaap Mooij.

The present lot shows poster designs for one of these exhibitions of circa 1950-1951. Image 134 I can be attributed to Corneille and 134 II to Appel; 134 III to Constant. The attribution of the other works is more difficult; it has been suggested that they are executed in cooperation between the three artists.
