Lot Essay

Christian H. Fischbacher was born in 1913 as the eldest son and heir of the famous Swiss Fischbacher family company, a firm specialised in raw fabrics. Too energetic to fit in the old company, in 1937 he migrated as a young man to New York, where he founded his own company. This business was slightly different; it focused on designing and finishing off the fabrics, in stead of trading only. Due to the war and the collapse of the European market, Fischbacher ran a huge cow farm in New Jersey, before returning to Europe to take over the family business in 1953. He transformed it into a modern company, introducing his New York experiences.
As with the business, he decided another path for the family collection of art. The collection was traditionally focused on Swiss art, including the core of the collection of the current Giovanni Segantini Museum in Sankt Moritz. Fischbacher introduced international movements, like Russian constructivists and South East Asian art, thus pushing the quality to an outstanding level throughout.
Fischbacher sadly died on 2 January this year. Next to a keen businessman, a collector with the true eye of a connoisseur, he will be remembered as a great sportsman (a.o. member of the 1948 Swiss Olympic team in skeleton) and honorary president of the famous Cresta club in Sankt Moritz.
Christie's is proud and honoured to offer four works from the outstanding Christian H. Fischbacher family collection (lot numbers 183, 308, 314 and 316).

To be included in the catalogue raisonné on the artist's work being prepared by the Netherlands Institute for Art History (RKD) in The Hague.
