Lot Essay

The Comité Chagall has confirmed the authenticity of this painting.

Le couple dans le paysage bleu presents a typical dream-like vista filled with elements from Chagall's own personal repertoire of the magical and the mysterious. Depicted in bold red and a golden yellow that echoes the pale moon, the figures are starkly set against an irridescent blue background that seems to glow and shimmer around Chagall's beloved Saint-Paul de Vence, heightening the viewer's awareness of Chagall's bold colourism.

The magical atmosphere of Le couple dans le paysage bleu is further heightened by the additional figures and animals floating in the periphery. Combining many of Chagall's favourite themes, from flowers and lovers to music and animals, the artist creates a tableau that combines the fantastical with the nostalgic, as though the viewer were being admitted to a hidden and private section of the artist's own memories and associations. This adds to the sense of poetic whimsy and romance that suffuses Chagall's paintings.
