Lot Essay

The sitter was the eldest daughter and co-heir of John, 19th Earl of Crawford and 3rd Earl of Lindsay, and Emilia (d.1711), daughter of James, Lord Doune. She married Lord John Wemyss, second son of James Wemyss of Unthank; her husband was appointed Lieutenant-Governor of Edinburgh Castle in 1762.
