A REGENCY MAHOGANY CHAMBER WRITING-TABLE
ATTRIBUTED TO GILLOWS, EARLY 19TH CENTURY
The rounded rectangular top with reeded edge and compartment to the rear enclosing a pen divide and two ink-wells, above a mahogany-lined frieze drawer with original handles and convex quarter-fillets, on turned tapering legs, with brass caps and castors stamped 'COPE AND COLLINSON', the base of the drawer with chalk inscription 'To be polished A.C'

Lot Essay

A sketch for a closely-related table appears in Gillows' Estimate Sketch Books, dated 1810, called by them a 'chamber writing-table' (No. 344/144, p. 11, Westminster City Archives).
Gillows supplied four tables following this pattern in 1811 to T.W. Egerton for Tatton Park, Cheshire (N. Goodison and J. Hardy, 'Gillows at Tatton Park, Cheshire', Furniture History, 1970, pp. 28, 30, 32 and 35, pl. 16B).
A chamber table of closely related form was sold anonymously, Christie's, London, 14 September 2004, lot 80.
