Lot Essay

The Villa Albani was created by Cardinal Alessandro Albani between 1746 and 1764 and the casino set in the formal gardens contained his celebrated collection of antiquities and Roman sculpture.

Emma Ciardi painted many Italian gardens and the Villa Albani was a particularly popular subject for many artists who were attracted by its formal parterres, now mellowed by the passing of time.
