Lot Essay

The artistic genre of Commedia dell'Arte experienced its heyday in the 18th century as theatrical productions and especially in European porcelain. Here we see this popular theme adapted to 19th century miniatures in the jewellery context. Of the Commedia dell'Arte troop only Harlequin wore the black mask together with a colourful checkered costume. His female counterpart Columbine occasionally also dressed to match.
