GOSSEN, Hermann Heinrich (1810-1858). Entwickelung der Gesetze des menschlichen Verkehrs, und der daraus fliessenden Regeln für menschliches Handeln. Berlin: R.L. Prager, 1889. 8°. With the cancel half-title, white-on-black diagrams (a little minor discolouration). Contemporary green cloth (a little marked). Provenance: Erich Roll's copy, Austrian economist who taught at Hull and London, author of A history of economic thought, 1938 (pencilled signature on an endpaper).
Second edition of this important work by H.H. Gossen and the first work to elaborate a general theory of marginal utility. The first edition appeared in Brunswick in 1854 and was not well received owing to Gossen's dense mathematical style - he, however, considered it to be comparable to the innovations of Copernicus, an opinion not shared by the German public, and the work was withdrawn. His theory was rediscovered in the early 1870s by Jevons, Menger and Walras and prompted Gossen's nephew to te re-issue the sheets (which had been retained by Gossen) with a cancel title and new preliminary matter. It was an immediate success. Einaudi 2657; Cossa 213 (25).
