etching with drypoint and engraving, Harris's state I iii, an exceptionally rare working proof before letters and numbers (Harris records two other examples, both in public collections), a fine impression, on stout laid paper, with wide margins, the number 4 in pen and ink in the upper right corner, the artist's name and a price (5/-) in pencil in the lower margin, a crease across the lower left corner (just touching the corner of the subject), a soft vertical crease in the centre of the sheet, a small brown stain just above the head of the man lying to the left, pale scattered foxing, remains of old adhesive on the reverse at the upper sheet edge where previously mounted, minor soiling

Lot Essay

The disposal of bodies after both sieges of Zaragoza was a serious problem. Eye-witness accounts talk of huge piles of corpses, naked and putrefying. This was particularly hazardous after the first siege, which was lifted in the stifling summer heat of August 1808.
