John Paul Cooper (1869 - 1933)
John Paul Cooper was trained as an architect but later specialised as a designer, goldsmith and silversmith. After attending Bradfield college Cooper began work at the architectural firm of J.D. Sedding where he met Sedding's assistant Henry Wilson. Both he and Wilson developed a keen interest in metal working and jewellery design. Cooper took a post as head of the metalwork department at Birmingham school of Art and joined the 'Birmingham group' that included members such as the jewellers Arthur Gaskin and Sidney Meteyard. He later set up his own workshop producing pieces for the Artificer's Guild as well as creating his own designs some of which he exibited at the Exposition De l'Art decoratif in Paris. He often executed his jewellery in gold as opposed to the more typical silver creations produced by his associates.
