ROME OR NAPLES, 17TH CENTURY
With central oval panel of brocatello di spagna centered by black, white and green marble foliate scrolls, within spandrels of alabastro fiorito and outer border of portor marble, possibly originally a wall or floor panel set within a modern frame and consequentially probably relaid

Lot Essay

The small scale and relatively spare design of this specimen marble panel relates it to an example in the Church of S. Teresa degli Studi, Naples and attributed to a Neapolitan workshop (illustrated in A.M. Giusti, Pietre Dure, London, 1992, p. 225, fig. 82). A further related example, possibly originally acquired by John, Lord Lumley (d. 1609) for Nonesuch Palace, was sold Christie's, London, 5 July 2001, lot 34.
