Lot Essay

Another version of the present lot of similar size, signed and dated 1760, was exhibited at the Paris Salon of 1761, no. 83. That picture and its pendant served as models for tapestries by Michel-Henri Cozette made at the Gobelins factory, Paris, and were praised by Diderot in his Salon de 1761, (D. Diderot, Salon de 1761, ed. by J. Seznec and J. Adhémar, I, 1957, pp. 95-6 and 130-1).
