A SOUTH GERMAN TURNED LIME WOOD CHESS SET
MID 19TH CENTURY
The kings and queens and bishops with painted 'toy' faces, the bishops with bone finials to the dark side, the rooks as turrets with balls carved within the pierced domed tops, the pawns with ovoidal bodies
The king -- 4½in. (11.5cm.) high; the pawn -- 2½in. (6.5cm.) high
