LAST QUARTER 19TH CENTURY
Depicting Good versus Evil, the white king and queen modelled as Medieval style monarchs, the bishops as a courtier, the knights on horseback, the rooks as elephants each surmounted by a turret, the pawns as cherubs bearing arrows, the stained red side with the king modelled as a musing king, the queen with partially clad in drapery, the bishops as the devil, the knights devils riding on the backs of goats, the rooks as elephants each surmounted by a turrets, the pawns as devils each with forks
The king -- 4 3/8in. (11cm.) high; the pawn -- 2½in. (6.3cm.) high
