AN ITALIAN CARVED CORAL AND LAVA BUST TYPE CHESS SET
FIRST QUARTER 19TH CENTURY
Depicting the Romans versus the Saxons, the lava side modelled with a bust of Caesar on a relief carved baluster pedestal decorated with trophies, the Empress on an acanthus clasped relief carved pedestal with foliate swags and alternating crown and cross pendants, the coral side with a crowned king on tapering acanthus clasped pedestal with relief carved trophies, and base with lions' masks, the queen wearing a diadem, with a spiral of relief carved vine leaves about the pedestal base and winged cherub head masks on the base, the bishops as fous, the knights as horses' heads, the rooks as turrets, and pawns as foot soldiers, mounted relief carved baluster shafts and bases
The king -- 3 5/8in. (9.2cm.) high; the pawn -- 2¼in. (5.7cm.) high
