Lot Essay

According to the vendor, who worked in the music business and knew Keith Richards well, Richards wore this jacket circa 1973/4, and later gave it to him when packing up some possessions to move. The vendor had wanted a jacket from North Beach Leather, but at the time, their custom-made jackets proved very popular and the store (formerly located at La Cinega and Sunset, but now no longer in existence), were unable to make one for him.
This style of clothing, and this make in particular was clearly popular during the 1970s, as evidenced by the photograph illustrating Lot 115, which shows Keith Moon, in 1975, wearing an identical jacket to the one offered in this lot, suggesting that he either, at some stage borrowed this jacket, or had an identical one made [see also Lot 116]. John Entwistle is also photographed wearing a similar jacket on stage at a private concert in Shepperton, 25th May, 1978.
