Lot Essay

Rebuilt twice, once after the Restoration and again a hundred years later, the South Canonry at Salisbury stands on a medieval site. From 1225 until the Reformation, the lost medieval building had been the home of the Canon Chancellor, who was the chief supervisor of education at the Cathedral. As Parsons's watercolour is undated, it is not entirely clear whether she drew the garden before or after the Canonry became the official residence of the Bishops of Salisbury, in 1947.
