Four parts in one vol., 4° (200 x 160mm), the four parts misbound in the order listed (III, IV, II, I), and with the general title and dedicatory leaves bound with part I at the end of the volume. 4 engraved titles and 400 engraved circular emblems by Hans Sibmacker in the text (Ten leaves of part I dampstained at upper margins, some very light browning and occasional spotting.) Contemporary vellum, spine lettered in ink. Provenance: 17th-century circular blind-stamped coat-of-arms pasted onto circular engraving at foot of title of part III (the part bound in first), outer margin with contemporary ownership inscription 'J. Garinet D. M'.
THE FIRST COLLECTED EDITION OF THE FIRST WORK TO TREAT NATURAL HISTORY IN EMBLEMATIC FORM. The first part, published in 1590, is the first botanical emblem book and one of the first botanical books illustrated with copper plates. The remaining parts, dated 1595, 1596, and 1604, are on quadrupeds, birds and insects, fish, and other aquatic animals. 'Camerarius devoted each of the four centuries of emblems to a different corner of the created world: herbs and trees; quadrupeds; birds and flying insects; sea creatures. The completed design surveys the four orders of created things, each book confining itself to a single province.' (Manning, The Emblem, p. 120).
