BARTON, Clara (1821-1912). Large photograph inscribed and signed ("With the Sincere regards of Clara Barton"), by an unidentified photographer, St. Petersburg, [inscribed 1902].
9 x 7 in., minor mount traces on back, otherwise in very fine condition. Inscribed, signed and dated in ink in left lower portion of the sheet.
"THE ANGEL OF THE BATTLEFIELD". A finely detailed vignette portrait, with Barton in Victorian lace, red cross badge at her throat and another with ribbon in her collar. When this photograph was taken, Barton was in St. Petersburg, Russia, attending the Seventh International Conference of the Red Cross. Barton was the founder and first president of the American National Red Cross (1882-1904) and is remembered for her unceasing efforts to aid wounded soldiers during the Civil War, and afterwards, in the search for missing soldiers.
