FILLMORE, Millard (1800-1874), President. Carte-de-visite photograph signed and dated ("Millard Fillmore 1863"), by A.A. Turner of D.D. Appleton, New York (imprint on verso), n.p., ca.1863.

4 x 2 3/8 in., including mount, on gilt-ruled card. Boldly signed and dated in ink by the former President in blank area at bottom, verso with early inscription precisely dating receipt of the carte: "Presented to A.E. Goodman by Ex Pres Fillmore, Feb.5.1863."

FORMER PRESIDENT FILLMORE, DURING THE WAR HE DID LITTLE TO AVERT. A fine half-length image of the portly former President, white-haired and, as in most of his late portraits, rather severe in appearance. Signed cartes of Fillmore are noticeably rare. The last examples recorded in American Book Prices Current were an 1867 image from the Shochet Collection (sale, Christie's, 20 May 1994, lot 29, $4,500) and a different image in the Jacobs Collection (sale, Sotheby's, 29 October 1996, lot 90, $6,000).

Provenance: The Douglass Campbell Collection (sale, Christie's, 19 December 2002, lot 297, $9,500).
