MCKINLEY AND HIS CABINET, IN THE YEAR OF THE SPANISH-AMERICAN WAR. A remarkably sharp image, providing high-definition details of everything from the darkened rings under McKinley's eyes to the masthead of the newspaper on the table. Mckinley sits partially facing the camera, but staring away. A spitoon rests near his feet, and an impressive heap of papers lies scattered on the table. America made a fateful step into the ranks of imperial powers with its war against Spain in Cuba, followed by its subjugation of the Philippines. Here are the men who advised McKinley along that momentous course: Secretary of State WILLIAM R. DAY (who replaced John Sherman in 1898) sits at the President's right, Treasury Secretary LYMAN GAGE to his left. Others include Secretary of War RUSSELL A. ALGER (who would be fired the following year for his incompetence), Attorney General JOHN W. GRIGGS, Secretary of the Navy JOHN D. LONG, Postmaster General CHARLES E. SMITH, Secretary of the Interior CORNELIUS N. BLISS, and Secretary of Agriculture JAMES WILSON.
