MCKINLEY, William (1843-1901), President. Cabinet photograph signed ("William McKinley"), by Sarony of New York (imprint on lower portion of mount), n.d. [circa 1876]. (6½ x 4¼ in.) including mount.
A HALF-LENGTH PORTRAIT OF THE REPUBLICAN PRESIDENT, probably from his first term (1906-1900). His assistant secretary of the Navy and later his Vice President is quoted as stating that "McKinley has no more backbone than a chocolate eclair." The "Gold standard" candidate signs in dark ink along the left-hand edges (since Sarony's large imprint entirely dominates the small strip at bottom of mount). McKinley, in double-breasted suit and tie, strikes a resolute pose, shoulders back, gaze intense and unflinching.
