THE VICTOR OF GETTYSBURG. A three-quarter length portrait of the standing Meade, in full uniform, his stars visible on his shoulder straps, his hat clasped in his gloved hands. "General Meade was an officer of great merit, with drawbacks to his usefulness...he was unfortunately of a temper that would get beyond his control, at time" (General U.S. Grant). War-date signed photographs of irascible Meade are surprisingly uncommon; since 1970 American Book Prices Current records only three examples at auction.
