"HE GAVE OF HIMSELF WITH INTELLIGENCE AND ENERGY AND DEVOTION TO DUTY. AND HIS ENTIRE COUNTRY OWES HIM A DEBT OF GRATITUDE FOR THAT SERVICE."

A REMARKABLE GATHERING OF PRESIDENTS, FIRST LADIES, AND STATESMEN. Aside from bringing together five living Presidents and their wives, the funeral of Richard Nixon was notable for the remarks made by then-President Bill Clinton. An opponent during Nixon's tumultuous presidency (his wife Hillary Rodham was also a staffer on the House Impeachment committee), Clinton nevertheless gave an admiring eulogy. It seemed, in the eyes of many, to cap the long process of public rehabilitation that Nixon sought following his resignation and disgrace in 1974. "He gave of himself with intelligence and energy and devotion to duty," Clinton said. "And his entire country owes him a debt of gratitude for that service."
