NOTE:
Siu Fai Wing is guest professor at the Xi'an Academy of Fine Arts. Researcher at Zhejiang University's Chinese Art Research Department and member of the Xiling Seal Association. Siu specializes in painting flowers, landscapes and sometimes figures, with particular interest in plum blossoms. He insists,"Plum blossoms have different forms of beauty in nature, and they bear rich allegorical meanings. My ideal plum blossom painting is the one which has natural aroma the beholders can smell; the one with strength that the beholders can touch, and the one that the beholders can feel its liveliness." Siu's works demonstrate his theory. He used to paint the plum blossoms in a dense composition, yet there was still space within which one couild breathe. In this painting, in the timely snow, green pines and bamboos are situated among plum blossoms, forming a joyful and prosperous scene.
Siu likes to inscribe his paintings in small characters, whether they are a small leave album or a huge size picture. The lengthy inscriptions are so fluent that they enrich the overall picture. When Siu adds inscriptions, he tends to arrange them in group of varying sizes in order to show a layerig effect. Such scholarly manner combines together painting and calligraphy, showing the tradition that painting and calligraphy are of the same orgin. From this, Siu's profound skill in calligraphy is fully demonstrated.
