WHITMAN CONSIDERS "THE IDEA OF PEACE IN A STORM". The draft is written in Whitman's large hand in dark ink; the poet has deleted a number of words or phrases, and made several insertions; one word is added in blue crayon. In this unusual prose draft, Whitman explores the "idea that man must brace himself with Nature--with the subtle virtues of the mountains, the prairies, and the sea--the calming peace, the lull of the waves, the antiseptic air, the musical bass of wavy tree-tops, that he must enlarge and purify himself with these...."
