Details
AMMAN, Jost (1539-1591). Human Alphabet. Signed and dated "I.A. 1567." [but 1808/1816].

One sheet (270 x 363 mm), matted. Woodcut. (Some marginal repairs on verso, light browning and staining.) Provenance: Cornelius J. Hauck (purchased from Emil Offenbacher, 12 May 1965).

The Human Alphabet is a splendid production of the German Renaissance. All letters are formed by nude figures, alone or in groups of two, against an ornamental background. This is a later issue, dating from 1808-16 with woodblock at the lower left corner slightly worn. See Lehmann-Haupt and N. Petteway "Human Alphabets" in Amor Librorum pp. 97; Becker Amman 67; New Hollstein 280.
