24 volumes only (of 44, see note below), 4o. Numerous engraved plates, maps, and charts after Jacques de Séve and his son, Buvée l'Ameriquain, Oudry, and Baron (some folding) (some occasional pale spotting and marginal staining). Contemporary cat's-paw calf (worn, some covers detached).

In the hundreds of descriptions of mammals, birds, fish, and other animals found in Histoire naturelle, Buffon presents a natural history that could be explained scientifically, thus free from any theological influence. This set includes vols. 1,2,4,6,7, and 12-15 of Histoire naturelle générale et particulière, vols. 2-7, 9, and 15 of Histoire naturelle des oiseaux, vols. 1-5 of Histoire naturelle des poissons by La Cépède, and vols. 2 and 14 of Supplement.
