Commending his friend Trapadoux, 'jeune homme excessivement honnête', whose name may be used against [an unidentified creditor] who has written to Baudelaire's mother: 'Sa lettre est fort douloureuse. Force compliments sur ma personne, et grand souci de mon honneur. Je ne lui ai JAMAIS parlé de mère, de Turquie, ni de retour en France. Tout cela est un poeme arrangé pour soutenir son affaire.' Continuing his tirade, Baudelaire instructs his correspondent only to pay if he can exact a waiver for Trapadoux's debt.

Marc Trapadoux, Baudelaire's friend from an early age, acted as his witness when his quarrel with Armand Barthet threatened to lead to a duel. He was a member of the artistic and bohemian circles frequented by Gustave Courbet. Ancelle was appointed Baudelaire's conseil judiciaire, in 1844, when his finances were in particular disarray, and was frequently involved in the settlement of his debts.
