To his publisher on the final arrangements for his new work (the Mémoires) and the presentation of it (to the King).

Goldoni's Mémoires appeared in August 1787, published by 'la veuve Duchesne' and were an immediate success. The King ordered fifty copies, the Queen twenty-five and the courtiers over seventy while Catherine II asked for two dozen to be sent to St Petersburg. Goldoni had moved to Paris in 1761, following his bitter dispute with Carlo Gozzi, his fellow playwright in Venice; he received a position and pension at the French court and was given charge of the Théâtre des Italiens.
