HEINE, Heinrich (1797-1856). Autograph manuscript draft of the conclusion of an article, n.p., n.d., frequent cancellations and emendations, half page, 4to (260 x 210mm), on light paper (spotting, some acidification of ink leading to weakening of paper, some wear at margins), endorsed with an authentication in the hand of Heine's nephew, Ludwig von Embden, tipped onto a board, together with a leaf bearing an autograph sentiment signed by Heine's sister, Charlotte von Embden, in 1883.
THE STYLE IS NOT THE MAN. A fragment from critique of an unidentified writer, 'als Schriftsteller ist er eine bedeutende Erscheinung. Sonderbar! Dieser Mann ist eine lebende Widerlegung der buffonschen Aussprache: le style est l'homme' [as a writer he is an important phenomenon. Strange! This man is a living refutation of the foolish saying, 'the style is the man'], going on to praise the writer's style as 'schön, edel, wohlgewaschen und reinlich'.
A deleted passage indicates that the writer under consideration is French, and the passage may be a draft for a section of Heine's important series of articles on French society and culture which he later collected under the title Lutezia (1854).
