A courteous reply to a letter the honour of which overwhelms him: 'Il est vray que j'ay ceans vostre portrait avec quantité d'autres illustres; et quelques uns de vos livres aussi: mais tout cela est à mon honneur et à mon profit, selon les occasions de loisir que je puis prendre pour estudier, apres ce que je dois à ma profession, laquelle m'est en cela fort onereuse, qu'elle me laisse si peu de loisir pour me recreer cum Musis ... Les portraicts des grands hommes qui vous ressemblent, me delectent fort, eux ... mais à mon grand regret, je n'ay pû y atteindre: c'est pourquoy je me suis resolu de me contenter de bas bout, et in teltys consister, puisque je suis si eloigné du degré de cette perfection eminente, que Dieu n'a communiqué qu'aux grands Genies, et aux esprits heroïques tel qu'est le vostre'.

Guy Patin was the headmaster of the Ecole de Médecine and a professor of the Collège de France, but is remembered especially as a prolific correspondent. His correspondent, the influential protestant theologian Paul Ferry (1591-1669) spent most of his life at Metz. (2)
