Lot Essay

We are grateful to Ludwig Meyer for proposing that this picture is by an artist working in the Upper Rhine region, of circa 1460. He notes that the picture formed the right side of a small portable triptych. One can assume that when the triptych was closed, the exterior, in the same manner as the reverse of this lot, would have been painted in trompe l'oeil marble.
