Lot Essay

The prime version of this picture is in the Royal Collection at Windsor Castle. Van Dyck executed an earlier portrait of the three Stuart children, in which Charles is shown unbreeched (Turin, Galleria Sabauda; Barnes, et al, op. cit., pp. 476-9, no. iv.60).
