Lot Essay

George Patten exhibited extensively at the British Institution, where he must have seen Richard Buckner's submission of 1860: 'The Italian Goatherd' (no. 501). The present study is a faithful copy of this triple portrait depicting Vincenzo, a picturesque Roman boy who also modelled for Frederic, Lord, Leighton.
