AN ITALIAN ETCHED CIRCULAR SHIELD
circa 1600
Convex with turned edge, decorated with cabled bands of trophies radiating from a central medallion and characteristically filled with trophies, grotesques, insects and birds, a series of pendant shaped medallions between, each filled with a differing soldier in late 16th Century dress, studded with brass rivets for a later padded lining, and fitted with later central spike.
