BELL, Charles (1774-1842). A System of Dissections, Explaining the Anatomy of the Human Body, the Manner of Displaying the Parts, and their Variety in Disease. Edinburgh: Mundell and Son; and London: J. Johnson and Longman and Rees, 1799-1801.
2 volumes in one, 2o (425 x 267 mm). 30 engraved plates (some browning and dampstaining, a few minor marginal repairs). Contemporary half calf, spine gilt, marbled boards (edges and corners worn). Provenance: Dr. J. Wickham (bookplate, signature on title-page); a few pencilled marginal annotations; Haskell F. Norman (bookplate; his sale part II, Christie's New York, 15 June 1998, lot 284A).
FIRST EDITION OF VOL. II, second edition of Vol. I. Charles Bell, the younger brother of John Bell, had his first independent venture as an author published while he was still a student. Charles Bell was also trained as an artist, and drew all the illustrations for this work which were printed from plates made by various engravers. The first editions of parts 1 through 5 of Vol. I were issued between 1798 and 1799, and the first edition of the "Appendix" in 1800; the second editions of these parts followed the first by a year, and are often found bound with the first editions of Vol. II, parts 1 and 2.
