A Bronze Incense Burner
Meiji period (late 19th century)
Bronze with copper and gilt details, the globular body set on tripod beast-mask feet and cast and carved with large fan-shaped panels containing a tiger and an immortal and demon with a crane beneath a gnarled pine tree, the surrounding areas deeply carved with swirling dragons in clouds, the rim designed with two large phoenix heads and gilt phoenixes on the sides of the neck, the rim banded by tightly scrolling chrysanthemums, cover pierced around the edge with chrysanthemum-petal openings and with a finial cast as a boy rescuing a bird from the jaws of his dog
