Engraved frontispiece portrait of the author by J. Nutting after Melchior Füsslin, titles printed in red and black with engraved vignettes, engraved title after Anna Wasera, letterpress dedication and titles, 132 engraved plates including approximately 85 views, town plans, and maps, many folding, 2 with over-slips. (Vol. IV lacking 4H1-4L4, plates of vol. I mounted, large folding map in vol. III repaired, some folding plates torn at margin, occasional spotting and browning, and occasional marginal dampstain in vol. I.) 19th-century green roan, (extremities rubbed, scuffed). Second, enlarged edition of Scheuchzer's survey of Switzerland, greatly expanded from the first edition of 1708 and detailing all of Scheuchzer's nine visits to the Alps between 1702 and 1711. The work was the most extensive and detailed scientific and topographical survey of Switzerland to date with chapters on natural history, geophysics and reptilian monsters. Born in Zürich, Scheuchzer was the first scientific explorer of the Alps and a founder of paleontology and paleobotany. 'He had the honor of being one of the pioneers in correctly explaining the origin of fossils; he made medical studies on the effects of altitude; and his annual and systematic excursions through the Alps became classics of natural history observation' (Hoover Coll. S. 170). Published under the aegis of Sir Isaac Newton, a friend of Scheuchzer's, the plates were engraved at the expense of Newton and other scientists including Sir Hans Sloane, Derham and Petiver, and the resulting work was dedicated to the Royal Society of London.
