Lot Essay

The son and pupil of the distinguished 'bergmaler' Edward Theodore Compton (1849-1921), E. H. Compton was born in Feldafin in Oberbayern. He followed in his father's foosteps, becoming an artist (as did his two sisters) and specialising in Alpine scenery. He settled in Bavaria after continuing his studies in London. For the Comptons' life and work, see S. Wichmann, Compton: Edward Theodore und Edward Harrison, Maler und Alpinisten, Stuttgart, 1999.
