Frontispiece with signed photographic portrait, inserted addendum slip, one full-page and two half-page photographic plates, 15 text illustrations on 7 pages, and four folding maps, one printed in colour, the rest hand-coloured in outline, and another not called for in index, contained in pocket inside back cover. (Title uniformly browned and spotted, occasional light spotting, marginal stain affecting corner of one photographic plate.) Original red cloth titled in gilt (short tear to spine, light soiling). Together with: printed bifolium from the Asiatic Quarterly Review, April 1899, recording Leitner's death and his obituary on a newspaper cutting from March 1899.
One of only 100 copies of the first edition, signed by Leitner. Containing an outline of Leitner's journey from Lahore in 1866 through Kangra, Mandi, Lahul, Zanskar, Ladak and Kashmir. His findings here include a 'Comparative Vocabulary and Grammar of the Dard Languages' (Part I), a 'Vocabulary and Dialogues in the Shina Dialects' (II), and records of the 'Legends ... Fables, Customs ... Religion ... of the Shina Race, and the History of the Encroachments of Kashmir on Dardistan' (III). Leitner himself gives an account of this work, describing it as an enlarged form of Parts I, II and III, already published at Lahore as Results of a Tour in Dardistan: 'There are only a hundred copies of this edition, which is intended for the exclusive use of scholars'. The 1876 edition apparently unrecorded in Copac.
