FIRST EDITION of Avril's interesting, but ultimately unsuccessful, six-year journey through Russia in order to find a route to China. His first voyage took him through Syria, Kurdistan, Armenia and Persia before he was thwarted by the Governor of Astrakhan; he then attempted to reach China via Moscow, but was again frustrated and returned to France in 1690 by way of Constantinople, Moldavia and Poland. cf.Blackmer 58 (second edition).
