mm), each issue comprising four pages (a little worming at extremities, expert repairs at folds), unbound. Provenance: Kamil Qaisar al-Shidyaq, ownership stamps and one inscription. Al-Jawa'ib, founded and edited until his death by the Lebanese writer Ahmad Faris al-Shidyaq (1804-1887), was, while not the first,'the greatest Arabic newspaper of the 19th century' (Encyclopedia of Islam, 2nd ed., vol II, s.v. Djarida). It was read throughout the Arabic-speaking world as well as being on sale in London and Paris. It contained articles on politics, history, literature, linguistics and religion, as well as domestic (Ottoman) and foreign news and Reuters bulletins, and such information as the sailing-times of steamships to Alexandria. Supported by the Ottoman government, it promoted pan-Islamism, while at the same time being sympathetic to liberal and reformist ideas. Nos. 491-500 cover the end of the Franco-Prussian War, with the capitulation of Paris, as well as including poetry in praise of the Caliph-Sultan.
