Lot Essay
The finely detailed, jewel-like carving of these elegant wall lights is typical of the work produced in Turin in the 1770's and 1780's for the Royal court of Savoy and their circle by scultori such as Giuseppe Maria Bonzanigo.
To find wall lights of this form, clearly influenced by contemporary Parisian examples in gilt bronze, is comparatively rare, as a form of wall light, or 'ventola', with solid back plate, was more commonly employed in Piedmont. Wall lights of this latter model, with similarly finely detailed neo-classical carving, in the Palazzina di Caccia, Stupinigi, are illustrated in G. Ferraris, Giuseppe Maria Bonzanigo e la scultura decorativa in legno a Torino nel periodo neoclassico (1770-1830), Cavallermaggiore, 1991, pp. 73-4, figs. XXXVI-XXXIX.
