Lot Essay

The decoration of the present bowl is particularly delicate and represents a great feat of technical virtuosity. A similar white glazed bowl with underglaze cobalt-blue and black decoration is in the Plotnick Collection (Oya Pancaroglu, Perpetual Glory, New Haven and London, 2007, no.88, pp.100-101). Both have a very similar band of delicate kufic inscription, athough the letttering in the present example is slightly less schematic than that in Chicago. A restored example with plain white glaze was sold in these Rooms 4 April 2006, lot 124, while a similar more rounded plain white bowl is also in the Plotnick Collection (Pacaroglu, op. cit., no.50, p.93). Please see also the note to the preceding lot.
