Lot Essay

Shihabaddin Yahya ibn Habas ibn Amirak al-Suhrawardi studed fiqh in Maragh and, as a Sufi dervish, travelled in Anatolia. His teachings on the Way were disseminated through this work the Hiqmat al-Israq at the court of the Seljuk ruler Qilic Arslan II. Suhrawardi's followers, the Israqiyun or Nurbahsiya, spread his teachings through the Persian world. At the centre of his philosophy was Light as the source of all existence. His ideas were eventually to lead to his execution at the court of the son of Salah al-Din, Baha' al-Din, in Aleppo (C. Brockelmann, Geschichte der Arabischen Litteratur, Leiden 1943, GAL I, p.437).
