This portrait of the then Angela Dowding, was featured on the front cover of Woman's Journal, July 1952 (illustrated) following her marriage to The Hon. Gerald Lascelles. Joseph Oppenheimer was said to have been extremely pleased with the portrait - considering it an excellent impression of the sitter.
Joseph Oppenheimer was born in Würzburg, Germany, in 1876. Like many Jewish artists of the time he was forced to leave the country, fleeing to London in 1900. He spent the rest of his living in both London and Montreal, and was resident in the former between 1933 and 1949.
A portrait, landscape and still-life painter, Oppenheimer studied at the Munich Academy. The expressionistic handling exemplified in the following three portraits of The Hon. Mrs. Angela Lascelles was typical of his style as a portraitist.
