Lot Essay

The present work is one of many copies after the lost 'Saint Sebastian' by del Sarto, of which, on the basis of a photograph, Professor Freedberg, in a letter of 1981, wrote that it is 'at least tentatively necessary to conclude that this is an excellent stuido painting, I think, most likely produced during the last years of Sarto's life or very shortly afterwards by an assistant or close follower'.
